Amir A. Ghaferi, M.D., M.S., is the director of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative (MBSC), a regional, voluntary consortium of hospitals and surgeons that perform bariatric surgery in Michigan. The goal of the project is to improve the quality of care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Ghaferi graduated summa cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA in 2001, received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2005 and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Michigan in 2012. Ghaferi also completed a health services research fellowship with the Michigan Surgical Collaborative for Outcomes Research and Evaluation group and obtained a master’s degree in health and health care research during this time. He joined the Michigan Medicine faculty in 2012 as an assistant professor of surgery in the School of Medicine and an assistant professor of management and organizations in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. At the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, he is the chief of general surgery and founder and director of the Bariatric Surgery Program, which serves Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
