Surgeons Give Child With No Vocal Cords a Voice

Born with a rare condition, Grant needed specialized delivery to stabilize his airway so he could breathe. But the challenges — and solutions — didn’t stop there.

Before birth, Grant was diagnosed with congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS). He was delivered through a modified C-section called an EXIT procedure so that doctors could stabilize an airway, securing a way for him to breathe before he was fully "born."

When doctors discovered Grant had no vocal cords, his surgeon created them for him. Watch Grant's story above and see him vocalize for the very first time.
